Chests will appear regardless of whether or not you are on a mission run correct?

Correct, they are in missions and explore zones. They are randomly placed each time.

i find that chests spawn in the same area of a location on the map. For example if u find a chest and open it then come back to the area it wont be in the same place but not far away. IMO the spawn isnt completely random.. just a bit random.
